One couldn't go anywhere or socialize with anyone without telling her husband, and getting his permission. She was pregnant and miscarried, and I always wondered. Yet another was scared to leave her boyfriend because he threatened to kill himself if she left. Another woman, in her late 50s, was living with a violent alcoholic she'd often come to work with bruises on her forearms. One woman's husband broke her hand (she told everyone she fell in the shower, but when we were out drinking one night she told a group of us the truth.) Another's husband had been arrested at least once. At one point, I think nearly every single female employee - from late teens to 50s - was in a physically abusive relationship. R100 in my 20s, I worked for a few years at a large drugstore chain. ![]()
